A legendary Bollywood actress and a Padma Shri awardee, Bhanurekha Ganesan, popularly known by her stage name, Rekha, has appeared in more than 180 films so far. Rekha debuted as a child actor with a small role in the 1958 Telugu film 'Inti Guttu' when she was just one year old. Even though she didn't want to pursue acting, she had to drop out of school and start a full-time career in acting as her family was facing a financial crisis. In 1969, Rekha got her first lead role in the Kannada film 'Operation Jackpot Nalli CID 999', which was a huge success. In the same year, she signed her first Hindi film 'Sawan Bhadon' (1970), which was a commercial success. Over the years, Rekha got many projects, but none of them made a significant change in her position in the industry. After facing multiple problems in cinema, Rekha's stardom changed after the release of 'Ghar' (1978). Some of her most notable movies include 'Muqaddar Ka Sikandar', 'Do Anjaane', 'Suhaag', 'Mr. Natwarlal', 'Umrao Jaan', and 'Silsila', among others. She earned many Filmfare Awards throughout her career. Rekha also worked in parallel cinema but saw a decline in her career after 1990. In 2010, she was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India.
